A selection of seemingly trivial questions about fraction comparison, but these can easily be turned into whole lessons of very deep mathematical discussion. One of my favourite activities to do at the start of a topic on fractions - check the notes for more details.

This lesson is based on a fantastic resource from jlcaseyuk (via TES) - this is a set of cards with details of different bank accounts, including simple and compound interest, annual, monthly and quarterly interest payments. I adapted this and created a presentation as I felt my class needed more structure than just "here's a set of cards", hence plenty of worked examples for them to follow.

I also split the cards into annual, quarterly and monthly interest payments and printed onto red, orange and green paper respectively, allowing me to direct the pupils towards particular sets of cards.

Scaffolded approach to working out arc length and area of sectors, working from full circle to semicircle and quadrant, then to sectors. Work through mini-investigation as a class, then supplement with independent questions.

Full lesson using algebra tiles to solve simple two-step equations (positive x coefficient only).

Pupils use their average day to construct a 24-sector pie chart, then calculate what fraction and percentage of their time is spent on each activity. Finally they work out how many years they will spend on each activity (average lifespan of 80 years).
